Ugh, it’s that time of year again where the Australian summer chokeholds the season and punches the living shit out of anyone standing on this land. In general I actually really like summer but summer here in Australia is a time I dread because it does kick me in my ass physically, so I need to make sure I’m prepared.
Let’s take a deep breath, clutch onto a block of ice, and dive in.
A Summer Scent
I am hoping to be the busiest bee this summer with writing a book and getting back into the swing of things, and sometimes the best thing for me is to have a good smell envelope me. The smell of citrus definitely lifts my spirits and gets me going, as well as scents that bring nostalgia or motivate me. I have a discontinued fragrance that is my absolute favourite to wear, however, I don’t want to waste it spritzing it around my study and bedroom. With that in mind, I’m hoping to grab some perfumes from Demeter, the coolest company that sometimes do the most obscure and random fragrances, but hot damn are they good. I absolutely adore their fragrances.
Gentoo Jug by Ecobud
I was actually going to do a single post almost 2 years ago about this jug but I never did, so here is my favourite jug that keeps me hydrated and Brisbane water not tasting so shit, the Gentoo Jug by Ecobud. Nothing too complicated, it’s a jug, but it filters crap (eliminating fluoride was my main issue when buying this) out and is pretty cheap compared to other jugs out there.
I’m sorry I still haven’t shut up about this foot peel, but it really is the only worthy thing for my very neglected feet. It helps my feet get summer-ready in only a few days, and I didn’t have to shove my foot in anyone’s face! As long as you don’t mind a few days of shedding skin on your floor and making it look like a Christmas wonderful, this product is perfect.
Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturiser
No one wants to put lotion on when they’re sweating just moments after getting out of the shower, especially since any lotion on your skin makes sweating even worse. In comes Vaseline’s Spray Moisturiser, a light moisturising spray that sinks in very quickly. I like using this after a shower or putting it in the fridge for a few minutes before spraying my legs and feet to cool them down.
Cancer Council approved sunscreen
This one is a given for summer, especially Australian summer. I’m very pale and have a family history skin cancer, so it’s something I take very seriously and don’t do DIY sunscreen or anything like that. I only use products by the Cancer Council and my favourite is the really handy clip-on little bottle – look how cute this is! Whether you want the Peppa Pig or Active bottle, these little suckers are easy to carry with you, especially with the high UV days.
Schick Hydro Silk trimmer and shaver
I’m not going to beat around my bush, but I’m a hairy bitch. No thanks to my Mediterranean heritage, I need more than a shaver and half an hour of my time to get me feeling somewhat human, so here’s my little saviour. It only takes one AAA battery and lasts a long time. It gives a close trim but doesn’t knick the skin at all. Also it’s waterproof so you can use it in the bath or shower, drop it in water and it’s still great!
Smooze! Fruit Ice Blocks
What would summer be without ice blocks? They literally keep the population of Australia alive! I would normally put Australia’s Champion Ice Block here, Zooper Dooper(s), but we currently don’t have room in our freezer so I go to my weird favourite, Smoozes! They’re made with coconut milk and come in different flavours that are super refreshing, especially pineapple.
There are so many things we look forward to at summertime, but there are loads of things that make it unbearable yet my favourites always make it a little easier to deal with (what first world problems!). So stay hydrated, slip-slopped-and-slapped, and I’ll see you guys next time.
