Realistic Ways To Take Some Years Off



Hey guys, welcome back! How are you? That’s good! I’m back with a beauty-based post to start our April off and -spoiler alert- this won’t be about getting Botox or rubbing jellyfish on your face. It’s going to be easier and realistic ways that you might not have thought about if you’re looking to appear younger.

I do want to preface this with why we’re doing this kind of post. Last month I was scrolling through Twitter and a certain thread reminded me of a customer I had years ago for a certain brand at a certain department store. This customer and the Twitter user felt their thin brows aged them and were wondering how you start growing thicker brows out after 10+ years of extreme plucking.

I decided that if this is something that’s been actively searched for on a daily basis but there are small things anyone can do to help them take some years off (or, more importantly, feel better about themselves), and I have some tips, I should share them. You might find you’ve tried all of them or find them redundant, but I hope something helps someone out there.



First things first, ask yourself why you searched for this post and others like it, or why you clicked. Was it curiosity? Was it that people keep saying you look tired? Did one line on your forehead send you down a spiral?

It’s really important you check in right now with yourself and ask this question. Our skin, hair, nails and insides take such a beating year after year that it shouldn’t even be an issue that a typical 50 year old body is going to have more “wear and tear” than a typical 20 year old one. Typical being the keyword; some 30 year olds have contributing factors that some 60 year olds haven’t had to ever contend with, or have just started experiencing.

Whatever your answer to the question is, you owe it to yourself to be honest -and cut yourself some slack.




Like I said above, brows! Easy thing you can change as long as you have the right brow type, colour and some practice. My answer to that customer was, yes, in our silly little human brains thinner brows is like thinning hair which equates to losing hair, whiiiiich -ding ding ding- equals aging.

You basically have to do three things:

  1. Grow them out. Let them grow until it gets to a length you can use tweezers to start making your new shape.
  2. Practice drawing your shape and ‘grow’ to it. Almost every time someone draws thicker brows without gradually drawing them bigger over a period of time, they think they’re huge and they’ve made a mistake, so best thing is give yourself a month to slowly train your brain into seeing thicker brows.
  3. Once you’ve grown them out a bit and have mapped out the brow you want you can now do some cleaning up in between the brows, above and a little under the crease of your lid. It will be very hard to not pluck all the hairs (do you know how many times I’ve tried growing out my brows only to pluck the ones growing out?). Depending on what’s easier for you, you can either draw your desired brow on – or like the blue pen in the bad drawing I made below – map it out with an eyeliner (white is best) and pluck around the perimeter.

From left to right is an example of a starting brow plan, with the left showing a thin brow and the ideal end result. As brows grow out the ‘template’ brow can be drawn and strays plucked while at the same time getting more confident with filling them in. The end result would be a thicker, fuller brow.

Now you might be thinking that this is well and good but you don’t grow enough hair to make your brows thicker, that’s where the second point of practicing your desired brow comes in. Products are getting more exact and real-looking that you can do a really convincing temporary brow… a temporbrow, if you will.




Well it sounds obvious but it goes hand-in-hand with brows. A dark, solid colour can look more mature than lighter tones, but that isn’t the full story. Having the right hair colour, length and cut for you will really rewind the clock.

Things to consider are:

  1. Length (and cut). Longer hair can look more youthful but it depends on your…
  2. FACE! This is another reason why it’s good to find out your face shape. Long hair doesn’t make everyone look younger as it can draw the face down, so really figure out what your face shape is.
  3. Your skin tone! Which changes quite frequently! But most importantly-
  4. Your undertone! Yes, you might be “pale”, but are you a cooler pale or can you get away with golden blonde? Your undertone is the result of the colour underneath your skin coming through those layers of skin. This also means it never changes but it’s always forgotten about even though it helps us pick flattering hair shades, makeup, clothes, all of it!
  5. Curly hair typically resembles youth (probably because curly hair is thick and voluminous), so if you have naturally bouncy hair, celebrate it! If you’re like me and have Neil from The Young Ones hair, you can fake it thanks to a curler or straightener, ala Brooklyn Decker above.
  6. Other than curling your hair, fringes/bangs and ponytails with a bit of bounce in the tail also hint at a more younger look.





Okay, so you know your undertone, you’ve made peace with your skintone shade, you’ve got the brows you want but now you’re at the spiral staircase that is makeup. While it might seem overwhelming to think about makeup, if you’ve got the right colours or whatever, it’s best to K.I.S.S.

I mean the abbreviation: Keep It Simple, Stupid. If you know your undertone and skintone, you’ve done the hard part, now you need to remember three golden things:

  1. Satin , glossy and dewy are the keywords when it comes to younger skin complexion.
  2. Keep it subtle and minimal, and
  3. Natural colours help show a younger look. Less pigmented shadows work best here.


Matte foundation can take away any ‘radiance’ and moisture in the skin as well as emphasising skin flaws, while foundations that are satin and dewy replicate moistured skin, which equals youthful-looking skin.

Glossy (not frosty) lipsticks and glosses replicate the moisture trick as well as hide imperfections (e.g. deep lip lines).

Black liners, heavy makeup including contouring can give the illusion you look older. Don’t believe me? Watch pageant kids or look at Kylie Jenner.

Look to Asia for more minimistic makeup ideas, especially South Korea where stains, peaches and pinks dominate with clean and simple eye looks.

One last tip I want to leave you with is that makeup that is ‘flicked up’ gives the illusion of a lifted face, so a cat eye (even a mini one) and highlighting the tops of the cheeks and above the brow arch give you that look very easily.





Obviously not everything can be makeup tricks, and maybe you don’t wear makeup anyway. Either way, your skin needs to be taken care of and, realistically, the only things you can do yourself are:

  1. Exfoliating to make it easier for new skin to emerge by removing dead skin cells.
  2. Keeping on top of moisturising your face, neck and hands, which apart from the obvious keeps skin supple and eliminates dehydration lines.

Everything else is prevention through some ingredients, sunscreen, drinking water and getting the right nutrients and, of course, trying not to stress, which of course sounds easy but is usually anything but.
